• 11 Several online sources were particularly helpful for identifying closures: Becker’s Hospital Review and the North Carolina Rural Health Research Program at the University of North Carolina’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research were helpful sources of information from 2010 to present. Information on closures before 2010 was available from lists compiled by state hospital associations and newspaper articles that covered hospital mergers, acquisitions, and closures. We were able to identify the status of all hospitals on our original list. However, in a few cases, it was unclear whether a hospital on the Provider of Services list had merged with another institution or closed. We used Google Maps to look up the location of such hospitals and confirmed that there was not a general hospital in operation.
